A district and sessions court in Islamabad court has discharged senior journalist Ayaz Amir in Sarah Inam murder case as police found no evidence connecting him to the case.
He was presented on Tuesday before the court of Civil Judge Muhammad Amir Aziz which issued a reserved verdict saying that no evidence was found against the senior journalist in connection with his daughter-in-law’s murder.
As the proceedings started, the police requested for five-day extension in Ayaz’s physical remand. Advocate Basharatullah, Nisar Asghar and Malik Zafaran submitted papers to represent Ayaz Amir in court.
During the proceeding, Basharatullah said that the police arrested his client but he is not connected to the case in any way. Ayaz was at his residence in Chakwal and he is the one who called the police, he said.
If someone is coming from the UK, then they can’t be the witness of the case, the counsel said.
Ayaz’s counsel said that the police have not been able to justify on what ground they arrested his client.
The prosecution lawyer said that Ayaz and his son had contact on WhatsApp is the only evidence they have right now. If we feel that he is innocent, we will discharge him ourselves, the prosecutor said.
During the hearing, the court inquired about the person who had nominated Ayaz in the case. He is the uncle of the victim and is in Pakistan, the prosecutor replied.
Prima facie, what evidence you have that he is involved in the case, the court asked. On this, the prosecutor said that the victim’s parents have all the evidence.
All the police have to do is to press a button and they’ll have the call data records (CDR), Basharatullah said. If Ayaz and his son talked, does it mean that he can be booked under section 109, asked Ayaz’s counsel.
Afterward, the court issued discharging order for Ayaz Amir as no evidence was found against him.
