Renowned playwright, actor and literary giant Shoaib Hashmi has passed away in Lahore.
The veteran television personality had been suffering from a protracted illness for a long time. He is said to have suffered a brain haemorrhage 12 years ago.
He had been bedridden for over a decade after he suffered the stroke. He was reportedly unable to speak or walk by himself.
During the 1970s, Shoaib Hashmi gave PTV some of its most popular programs and dramas. He is considered among the pioneers of the national television.
His funeral prayers were not announced yet, as his daughter is currently out of country.
Shoaib Hashmi made a huge name for himself with shows like ‘Taal Matol’, ‘Akkar Bakkar’, and ‘Such Gap’.
He earned a Masters in Economics degree from Government College, Lahore, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and also studied theatre from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London.
He also remained a professor of economics and taught at various instutitions.
He leaves behind his wife, renowned artist Salima Hashmi, and children Adeel and Mira Hashmi.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the demise of THE prominent teacher, playwright, comedian and poet.
He sympathised with Moneeza Hashmi, Saleema Hashmi and other members of the family.
The PM said late Shoaib Hashmi had made a remarkable contribution to the golden era of Pakistan Television and also introduced new dynamics in comedy programs.
Hashmi also wrote historic and unforgettable plays that highlighted great values, traditions and ideologies.
PM Sharif said writers and intellectuals like Shoaib Hashmi had taught manners and ethics to society. His death is a huge loss the society, art and literature, he added.
Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb also expressed deep grief and sorrow over the death of the renowned intellectual, teacher, dramatist and son-in-law of poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz.
In her condolence message, the minister paid tributes to Shoaib Hashmi, saying he was the creator of PTV’s early programs.
The services of Shoaib Hashmi for the showbiz industry, as well as the teaching profession, will always be remembered, she maintained.
Interim Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi also extended condolences on the death of the renowned literary personality. He expressed grief with the bereaved family, and said Shoaib Hashmi gave a new dimension to playwriting.
The late educationist inspired two generations with his literary skills and writing, CM Naqvi said, adding Mr Hashmi also had a command over comedy.
Actor and singer Khaled Anum shared his condolence message for Hashmi on Twitter, calling him “the incomparable, a teacher to thousands, an inspiration to millions.”
