An audit report has exposed widespread corruption and financial irregularities of over Rs. 12 billion in the Sindh Health Department. According to the report, cancer medicines worth Rs. 360 million have been stolen from Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital in Karachi.
The audit, which reviewed the accounts of the caretaker government for nine and a half months and the current Sindh government for two months, exposed multiple instances of mismanagement and suspected embezzlement.
Among the most alarming revelations was the large-scale theft of cancer medicines in 2023. The hospital superintendent confirmed the incident, identifying a staff nurse and a dispenser as the primary suspects.
Despite the gravity of the theft, the hospital administration has yet to refer the case to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) or the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for a formal investigation.
The audit team has strongly recommended a comprehensive inquiry into the matter, citing the lack of action by hospital authorities even months after the incident came to light.
The Sindh Health Department has not yet issued an official response to the audit findings.
