Karachi: Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), has been awarded the 2026 James and Carol Hovey Eisenhower Fellowships Impact Award in recognition of his leadership in building and leading one of the world’s largest healthcare networks providing quality medical care free of cost to millions of people across Pakistan.

He has now been chosen for Eisenhower Fellowships’ fourth annual Hovey Impact Award, which recognizes the exceptional contributions of an outstanding Eisenhower Fellow who has created positive and lasting impact in society.

Dr. Abdul Bari Khan dedicated the honor to the people of Pakistan, whose trust and determination continue to inspire the mission of Indus Hospital & Health Network. He also dedicated the award to IHHN’s generous donors, partners and government supporters, whose continued support has made this journey possible. In particular, he paid tribute to the doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals, staff and everyone who has been part of the IHHN journey. Their perseverance, commitment and tireless service have transformed a shared dream into a movement that provides healthcare to millions of people with dignity, respect and compassion.

Starting just 19 years ago as a 150-bed hospital in Karachi, Indus Hospital & Health Network has grown under Dr. Abdul Bari Khan’s leadership into a nationwide healthcare system serving more than six million patients annually. Today, the network comprises 12 multidisciplinary hospitals, four regional blood centers, three physical rehabilitation centers, and more than 100 primary healthcare centers and public health programs across the country.

Over the past year, IHHN performed more than 67,000 surgeries, while over 214,000 patients were admitted to its hospitals. During the same period, the network provided 2.9 million outpatient consultations, 1.4 million emergency care services, and more than 16,000 safe deliveries. In addition, more than 212,000 people received mental health services, while over 6.3 million people were screened for malaria.

To extend healthcare services to remote and medically underserved areas of Pakistan, Dr. Abdul Bari Khan and Indus Hospital & Health Network have introduced innovative solutions such as mobile medical units, rapidly deployable container clinics, boat-based healthcare facilities and telehealth services. Through these initiatives, healthcare is being delivered to people living in riverine areas, flood-affected communities, deserts, urban informal settlements and other locations where access to conventional healthcare systems remains limited.

Eisenhower Fellowships President George de Lama, while praising Dr. Abdul Bari Khan’s contributions, said that Dr. Khan had transformed his personal vision into an extraordinary nationwide network that has helped save countless lives and protect the health of millions of people every year. According to him, Dr. Abdul Bari Khan’s leadership and commitment to providing Pakistan’s most vulnerable and underserved communities with excellent healthcare, delivered with dignity and respect, exemplify the mission of Eisenhower Fellowships.

Dr. Abdul Bari Khan and his work were selected following a highly competitive process involving more than 45 projects. The selection process included a distinguished panel comprising Eisenhower Fellowships trustees, Fellows, external experts and senior officials.

Dr. Abdul Bari Khan’s 2004 Eisenhower Fellowship also played an important role in shaping the future of Indus Hospital. During his fellowship program in the United States, he studied healthcare systems and visited hospitals specializing in cardiac care and complex pediatric surgeries. The experience exposed him to different models of sustainable healthcare and connected him with a broad global network of leaders whose ideas, experiences and relationships have continued to guide the growth of Indus Hospital & Health Network.

As a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Abdul Bari Khan had demonstrated his commitment to providing free treatment to deserving patients years before the establishment of Indus Hospital. During his student years and early medical career, he was associated with the Patients’ Welfare Association, where he helped establish a blood bank. After beginning his professional career as a cardiac surgeon in 1996, he raised Rs35 million from philanthropists and community leaders to establish a cardiac surgery unit at Dow Medical College, where deserving patients received treatment free of cost.

As part of the award, Dr. Abdul Bari Khan will also receive a US$10,000 cash prize, which will be used to further advance and sustain the work of Indus Hospital & Health Network.

Eisenhower Fellowships Trustee Jim Hovey, a longtime former Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of its Executive Committee, will present the award to Dr. Abdul Bari Khan on November 11 in Philadelphia during the 2026 Eisenhower Fellowships Impact Award Ceremony and Pin Ceremony. The award was established by Jim Hovey and his wife, Carol Hovey.Global Honor for Pakistan and Indus Hospital: Dr. Abdul Bari Receives Eisenhower Fellowships Impact Award
